GETTING HERE

Westonbirt Cottage

Our cottage appears on the first edition OS map (1844-1888) when all around us was fields. It means that while we’re a short walk from the centre of Tetbury, we’re lucky enough to have a lovely garden and a little field beyond that. “Field” may be a stretch but our goats are Pygmy goats and most of the chickens are bantams so our smallholding is relative. For us it’s the best of everything, we can walk Joan and Dawn into town, we’re accessible by public transport but we are also far enough from town that we have parking for two cars and free on-street parking. As well as the main advantage of having a tiny castle in the shade of an ash tree where our animals live.

Planning your visit

Visiting the Cotswolds by public transport is an increasingly popular option. Our events are based around timings that suit the most people but we can usually adjust them to fit your journey. Just ask us before you book. When Toby was two, we visited my brother in Hong Kong for the first time and one of his favourite things was all of the modes of transport we used (ferry, peak tram, skinny tram, MTR, bus…).

We think as well as being a more sustainable way to travel, public transport allows everyone to really take in the scenery and it can be a lot of fun planning out your route. And of course the ultimate mode of transport has to be goat walking!

Offer: For everyone who can show us evidence they explored the Cotswolds using five different modes of transport (in addition to goat walking), we have created a special gift. Just show us your tickets or email confirmations when you visit.

Starting by train

Our nearest train station is Kemble. There are direct trains from London which take 70 minutes. It’s 90 minutes from Oxford (changing at Didcot Parkway), 60 minutes from both Bristol and Bath (both changing at Swindon) and a 40 minute direct train from Cheltenham. However, if you’re coming South, Stroud may be a preferable station.

The bus from Kemble

The 882 goes from Kemble to station The Priory Inn (a short walk from our smallholding).

The bus from Stroud

The 620 goes from Merrywalks (Stop K) to our doorstep. The bus stop for your return journey is within the footprint of our front garden.

Finishing on foot

From The Priory Inn, turn left and walk a few steps and you’ll see the estate agents, Hunter French. The road between them and Top Banana Antiques (which is well worth a visit) is Hampton Street. Westonbirt Cottage is number 80.

Of course if you came from Stroud, all you have to do is cross the road.

The Robin (the Gloucestershire County Council on-demand bus) is a bookable service that improves connections between rural areas. It was designed to serve residents but can be booked by anyone and we’re keen to see the service utilised lest we use it.

Cycling to us

Cycling is so popular around Tetbury we even have Veloton, a bike shop with a mechanic on site that also serves fantastic coffee. The cycle routes are too numerous to mention and we’ve previously enjoyed watching the Tour of Britain speed past our front gate. We can offer secure bike storage if you choose to incorporate a Pygmy Goat Picnic into your tour.

Offer: Let us know when booking that you’re arriving by bike and as well as being welcome to refill your water bottles and make use of our bike kit created by Veloton, we’ll send you on your way with some snacks for the road.

Coming by car

Pygmy Goat Picnics is on Google Maps and Westonbirt Cottage is at 80 Hampton Street. It is one of four small Cotswold Stone cottages and ours is the one with the bus stop and the large green gate.

We have space for two cars to park and there is free parking on the street. Please let us know how many cars you are bringing and we can ensure spaces are left.
